For your information When I started OpenCores back in 1999, I didn't think it would become as popular as it is. These days it has on average 80,000 different visitors every month and 7.5M web hits. More than 10,000 companies have downloaded from OpenCores. However it is time to take OpenCores to a new level, from which both users and developers would benefit. It is time for some major change. My intention is to sell the web site to an industry leader in semiconductor or EDA industry. The idea is to find a strategic partner, whose core business is not competing with OpenCores activities. This strategic partner should be in the right business so that the partnership with OpenCores would create a synergy effect from which both the partner company and OpenCores would benefit. This could mean a number of benefits for OpenCores developers. Partnership with an ASIC vendor or a semiconductor foundry could enable developers to prototype/silicon prove IP in silicon, while partnership with an EDA company could provide access to the latest EDA semiconductor tools. Partnership with an FPGA vendor could mean access to FPGA boards and tools. Partner company should also invest certain amount of funds to make OpenCores more professional organization, resulting in new business models for developers and users. For example, that developers could choose a business model for distribution of their IP and get financial compensation. Imagine that developers would be able to put their IP onto silicon MPW every six months - users would see higher value in such IP and be willing to pay for such IP - developers getting financial compensation would in return be able to put more time into development. You can see that this is a self sustainable model. Of course this is just one example - there are many other ideas but they all require a serious partner with motivation and financial backing. An industry leader would be a perfect fit. The benefits for the users would come from the fact that developers would have access to new services and resources, which means positive consequences for the quality of IP. The next step is to get proposals from industry leaders and see what are their interests. There is going to be a press release about this - however if you happen to work for a company, such as an ASIC vendor, foundry, EDA vendor or FPGA vendor, you are welcome to get in contact by emailing partnership at opencores.org. kind regards, Damjan Lampret Founder OpenCores.org

My opinion is that this is the best prescription for certain and imminent death
of OpenCores as it stands. It could make OpenCores indistinguishable to other
sites like open-but-no-so-open-crap, verificationcrapper, etc.

It mostly depends on the vendor intentions, and what "partnership" means to
them. Could it possibly mean much more taped-out ASICs, FPGA-enabled PCBs etc.?
Hopefully, yes, but this would involve a major investment from their side (money
, tools, infrastructure and people for coordination or even mentoring).

The most important question is under what conditions these IPs (and ASICs) will
enter the market. Probably, OpenRISC 1200 and 5-6 other projects from some
design houses will have certain success.

Anyway OpenCores is your creation and it is up to you.

Kind regards
Nikolaos Kavvadias

PS1: Compensation is a nice vision :)

PS2: What about the licensing of the existing OpenCores cores? Will they have
e.g. a GPLed version and vendor-endorsed one?

Only the cores which have been developed by Damjan are his to sell or
change the licensing (just for future releases, of course). The rest of
the cores have their own licenses unless their developers decide to
change it. We have to separate here two things:

1) The SITE opencores.org which belongs to Damjan Lampret, so he can,
naturally, do anything he wants with it

2) The CORES which are open because of the license they have been
published with, and JUST happen to be uploaded to the site called
opencores.org but they will still be "OPEN CORES" ANYWHERE they are.
It's its developer the one who decides the license of his/her core.

It's just the truth, nothing against Damjan ;-)

Best regards,

Victor

Hello All, I see there are some concerns. Some people are afraid of changes, others see them as an opportunity for improvement. Without changes there would be no progress. I think it would be unwise to jump to conclusions. Therefore my intention is to wait for feedback from companies, and see what their interests are and what kind of proposals they have. Based on that I will select a company that will bring the most benefits to OpenCores community. Until I receive some solid feedback and see in what direction their proposals are going, I think any discussion based on speculation will do more harm than good. regards Damjan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Damjan Lampret" damjanl at opencores.org> To: "Discussion list about free open source IP cores" cores at opencores.org> Sent: Thursday, June 07, 2007 12:31 PM Subject: [oc] The next step in OpenCores evolution
