Hi
I'd like to implement some core on fpga in vhdl and run on this OS like
linux. I meen board like this:
http://www.xilinx.com/xlnx/xebiz/designResources/ip_product_details.jsp?key=HW-SPAR3-SK-UNI-G
Can you tell which core shell I use or where can I find it?
thanks

Spartan 3 might be a little limiting to run Linux on,
Linux tends to want a MMU, Ok you can code it to run with out an MMU, but
not nice,
Much easier from a software perspective to have a MMU,
If you go for the Xilinx CPU ( Micro Blaze) then you should use a Spartan 3A
which can use the micro blaze 7, which has MMU support.
I'd presume same argument runs for other soft processors, you should have an
MMU to run Linux with little Linux software hassle.
( OK I'm a hard ware guy, just reporting what I've seen with my software
teams )
BTW: to save confusion, MMU = Memory Management Unit.

I read about spartan 3A, MMU and Micro Blaze and Im gonna choose this :)
On this site are 2 boards which support microblaze:
http://www.lynuxworks.com/board-support/xilinx.php
Xilinx Spartan-3E 1600E MicroBlaze Development Kit on xilinx site is No Longer
Available: http://www.xilinx.com/products/devkits/DO-SP3E1600E-DK-UNI-G.htm
and Xilinx Spartan-3A DSP 1800A - i dont need DSP :]
Which of those gonna be good for me:
http://www.xilinx.com/products/boards/s3_sk_promo.htm
please for help, I'm little lost:]

Hi
Can't really say what will be best for you,
Each and every person is different.
I'd have a grep ( sorry now a Google ) around the web, see if there is a
Linux that you like and good instructions on how to put it onto an FPGAs,
and stick with the board that those instructions give you.
A 10 second search gave me lots, like this one

t_for_Building_Low_Cost_Spartan_FPGA_Based_MicroBlaze_Processor_Systems_With

Never used it, but could be a way forward for you.

Hi
hea I know this board what you show me, but I think i dont need so good and
expensive
In my project a i have to choose same board and I'm thinking about this:
http://www.xilinx.com/products/devkits/HW-SPAR3A-SK-UNI-G.htm
On xllinx I have to implement some core in vhdl and run on it linux. On spartan 3A is
MicroBlaze but it's not my goal to use it. I've got docu. microblaze and Open RISC
1000 and I'd like implement one of those cores. So now I'm looking for a new docus
of cores to run on it linux.
What do u think about implementation OR1k in vhdl? Is it difficult task?
I'm gonna order this board SPAR3A

If you want a nice user interface and are willing to spend $200, you
can use a Nokia N800 and put an FPGA or a CPLD on an SD card. If I am not mistaken, the Nokia runs Linux with a ~400 MHz ARM type processor and has an 800 x 480 color LCD. It is hard to beat the low cost and utility of an off the shelf PDA. Antti Lucats made such a card using a Lattice XP Flash based device. But you could use any FPGA that comes in a 100 pin TQFP or if you are willing to work with BGAs, you can go up to 256 pins, IIRC. The only essential part of the SD card format the plug definition. You can always make the upper end larger to suit your needs, even use a larger FPGA! This would be so much easier than trying to build your own CPU card and it will provide so much more functionality. Rick At 06:32 AM 5/25/2008, you wrote:

I forgot to include the like for Antti Lukats' project document...

He seems to be a very ingenious kind of guy.

Thanks for advice, but this is my task to build CPU on FPGA board :)(on my uni)
Now I think, I have to choose which core to implement, MicroBlaze, OR1K or PowerPC:] I'm looking for information about linuxs to be able to run it on one of those cores. Help nice to see :)
The only essential part of the SD card format the plug

Hi
Ok, I saw you are evaluating Microblaze, but in this case you don't have
the VHDL for the CPU (not at least something human readable).
If you need the source code for the CPU core I'll suggest trying LEON3
(GRLib from Gaisler). We have various boards where LEON3 is supported
"out-of-the-box", (2 with Spartan 3 and other with Virtex 4), but if you
have to buy one try the ones from Pender, they are specifically designed
to run LEON3 (we have one with Spartan 3 1500). LEON3 source code (VHDL)
is under the GPL license, very good option for an academic project.
If you don't need the source code of the CPU and you can even use a hard
core then try to get one of the Xilinx University Program boards (your
Uni could have it or you can ask Xilinx to donate one) with Virtex 2
Pro, these FPGAs have Power PC hardcores. You can use the PPC from the EDK.
Microblaze is ok only if you can use a black-box as CPU.
