Verilog and vhdl use in altera schematic editor

Can anyone help with this problem.
I am new to PLD systems and know nothing about verilog and vhdl as I
use the altera schematic editor.
How can I use the cores written in verilog / vhdl in the schematic
editor ?
I can get a block symbol to display but it is only compiled if external
pins a assigned to it meaning no more logic functions can be attached
to it.

I am using Quartus II 7.2.
I would use nios II except my system has limited pins available and the
32 bit data bus is to wide to use and I dont think it can be shrunk down.

Any help would be of great benifit to a 'newbie' with this technology.

Not true, you can attach it to other blocks and it will compile.

As my opinion, You can get block files when you generate cores.
