Looking for a complete MP3 core to test

I would like to use one of the lower cost Actel parts and implement possibly
MP3 decode, some form of uC (8051/AVR) and maybe 10/100 or just 10 ethernet
MAC.
WOuld also be interested in a core to do OSD (on screeen display for
NTSC/PAL signal)
Thoughts? Help?
Richard.

Thoughts:
Yea. It sounds interesting....... but far from tirvial. I had the
impression MP3 was a pretty tricky algorithm to hardwire.
A quick Google pretty much confirmed this. You are probably looking at
implementing a DSP (best case).

I've looked at doing something similar. I don't know that it's going to be
cheaper/easier to do the MP3 decoding in a core vs. using an external
decoder like one of the Micronas parts. For a commercial product, I
believe that there are licensing issues that are sidestepped if you use a
part from a manufacturer thats been licensed by Fraunhofer.
For generating a NTSC/PAL display, I've looked at using a video encoder
such as the Analog Devices AD7171 or Philips SAA7103 attached to the
FPGA.

May I suggest ADI blackfin DSP? (o; Enough horsepower...can run
uClinux, SDRAM interface and parallel video input/output for their video encoders. New families have 10/100 MAC and USB device integrated as well...but this is an IP core forum...so I'll stop (o; rick |
