Seeking help on 5.1 Surround std.

HI, I am not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but still.............. Can any one in the list kindly help me in getting some info on 5.1 Surround sound? I am working on creating a "what-is-to-be-supported-in-hardware" sort of document for Surroundsound. The only material that I could get on the Web was Applying Aural Research: the aesthetics of 5.1 surround by Jim Barbour. Besides that document, I could not find any other helpful info. Amazon pointed me to a Book, "SurroundSound -Up and Running", but I need to get my claim clear before buying that book. Hope I am clear in my question. If not, please let me know if I need to clarify any other point. If any one feels that this is not the right place to put this query, kindly let me know so that this may not be repeated in future and please point me to the right forum as well. Hi, If you're interested in the interface typically used to transport surround sound between different pieces of equipment, you might want to take a look at some different IEC standards: * IEC60958 (also called S/PDIF and AES/EBU) is the serial optical or electrical digial interface commonly found on CD players, DVD players etc. The electrical interface and transport stream format is defined here, plus everything concerning transmission of ordinary 2-channel PCM sound. * IEC61937 seems to cover how to transmit MPEG, MPEG-2, AAC, DTS etc audio over the IEC60958 interface. They're all available at http://www.iec.ch, unfortunately at a cost. Regards Gunnar Dahlgren At 03:16 2004-03-25 -0800, R. Ramakrishna wrote:

HI Rudolph & Gunnar Dahlgren, Thank you very much for your suggestions. AC97, SPDIF, I2S are the Audio data transfer standards/ formats that I need to support in hardware. After selecting one of these, we probably need to support a 6-channel simultaneous transfer, for 5.1 Surround. That is, if we choose, say, AC97, we should have three instances of the same core, so as to get 3x2=6 channels for the Surround std. Selecting a DAC (Codec) and interfacing with it would be another issue to be taken up. [Please correct me if you find me wrong any where.] I need more info on the 6-channel transfer of data, as regards to the phase-relationship, relative-volume of the six channels. So far, the only base for my knowledge on 5.1surround has been the paper I named in my earlier mail, which can be accessed at: http://www.iii.rmit.edu.au/sonology/ACMC2002/ACMC2002_Web_Proceedings/017-026_Barbour.pdf Can any one of you kindly point me to any other source of information on the 5.1Surround sound? Thank you. -Ramakrishna Rudolf Usselmann rudi at asics.ws> wrote: On Thu, 2004-03-25 at 18:16, R. Ramakrishna wrote:
