Sounds like a very interesting project. Let me know if you need
help, I
might be able contribute.
Suggestions: - Add an optional interface that would allow to implement SoftRadio/SoftTv
Thats basically just a high speed ADC, that would connect some generic
tuner IF output. I believe all you need is about 80MHz, perhaps an option for a 125MHz ADC, would provide a wider selection .... - What kind of FPGA where you planning to include ? Using a Virtex Pro would give you a PowerPC ... might be a good idea .... Regards, rudi rudi at asics dot ws Thank you very much on your supportive E-mail message. Actually, I would
like to put, with your permission, your E-mail (with this reply) on the
Sure, no problem, just please make it NON machine readable, by doing something like: rudi at asics dot ws ...
list, since it is very important for me to make our communication
accessible for those who might be interested to join our efforts. I hope
that our discussion will foster emerging of other projects that
will put
engineers and developers together in creating open hardware projects.
However, we can work together or separately. Of course, we can work together on developing digital interface for possible interconnections of
our open hardware devices.
If I can help you to start a, your own, project, for example, DSP Radio PCI Card, please tell me. Your idea is (IMHO) great enough for new card.... with some extra features and high performances, of course... but, this still will be Radio Card. My plan is to make expansion connector with a standard interface (suggestion? Possible Wishbone... I don't know), on the top of card. With flat cable, it will be possible to make connection with your radio card, over digital interface, for mixing purposes, etc. At this point, it will be possible to connect video grabber cards, ATM interfaces, or any other idea, without PCI interface and/or operating system. I think that all-in-one cards is very helpful for learning and testing, but, this cards still not have professional value... because this is not
the target for
this cards, ... My idea is to make open hardware cards with valuable professional performances, but still DIYable. Note that we have very small back plate for connectors, two D-SUB 25 (high density) is enough to fill this small space.... antenna connector? Hmm, I'm not sure I understand. ok, I'll try to explain.
Back plane connectors for
a daughter card ? Yes, that would help. "picture" will be better than my interpretation: 2.54mm Exp. (parallel) Bus for any other card or set of cards (not faster than 25Mhz...) _ | | V +----------uuuuuuuuuuu----+ | | Digital E| | I/O E| | | Audio DSP | | PCI card | Analog E| | I/O E| | +-----++++++++++++++++----+ ^ | |||||||||||||||| | ^ | PCI Conn. | there is little space left for antenna connector...
I personally would
prefer standard 2.54mm headers, those are cheap and easy to get buy. OK, this is also in my mind
I would arrange them such so you can attach a
daughter card to the main PCI card, perhaps that will mean that it will take up two slots, but I thin that should not be a problem. Daughter card will open other questions... like: why we build cards with specific target? Then we will buld PCI bridge card only (with daughter board connectors)? Also we must use fine pitch connectors for daughter card... this is not cheap nor simple. (but not impossible)
There are also other options ...
I still think you should have the option for a fast(er) ADC on the main board, so all we have to add is a tuner. Otherwise it's just as easy to make a board from scratch ... Ok, I think that we still able to make Radio card with same Spartan and with fast ADC, tuner, etc. Most of Audio DSP card design will be reused in this case. Do you have any other feature or idea for DSP Radio target (except fast ADC)? Memory needs, or other resources?
Best Regards,
rudi
