I'd like to package all the tools necessary for a complete
digital design tool-chain for Debian. What tools do you find
indispensable?

Hello: You can also use GHDL, a gcc front-end, for VHDL design. But in fact is imposible to use a complete digital tool-chain. In the synthesis step you will need propietary solutions. So far, this is only part of gEDA, Icarus and a few other bits. Is there anything else in Linux world ? This might also be of interest http://shimizu-lab.dt.u-tokai.ac.jp/edalinux-1.1d.iso Its a Linux Live image based on SLAX , with Icarus Verilog , GTKWave , Alliance tools plus new langage tools based on SFL (Structured Function Description Language) All one needs to do is download it and burn a CD from the iso image and boot from the CD.
