Hello,

Is there a Debugger system core available here, that can be easily integrated
with whatever IP core? Like e.g. T51 8052 core?

It should allow non-intrusive real-time debugging with hardware breakpoints, tracing, etc.
Just like the commercial systems from Evatronix and Digital Core Design.

Any help appreciated,

/Pascal

My "Advanced Debug System" hardware is fairly modular. While the current version supports only the OR1200 CPU, it was designed so that new processor interfaces (or system busses) could be supported just by creating a new "bus interface unit" (BIU) module. The modular design actually worked well enough that I was able to add support for a custom system bus in just a couple of days (of course, I designed the whole thing in the first place...your mileage may vary).

There are (at least) two other hurdles to making this work. First, I don't know about the status of 8051 support in GDB (which is used to drive the entire debugging operation, at least with the OR1200). If it does not exist, then I think it would have to be added. Also, the JTAG driver/bridge/proxy program (adv_jtag_bridge, comes along with the Advanced Debug System) would have to be modified to support the 8051...but these changes might actually be limited to rsp-server.c, in the functions to 'get all registers' and 'set all registers'; the 8051 has different registers that the OR1200.

Finally, the T51 CPU would need to support a debug interface; it would need added hardware to allow external hardware to stop and start the CPU, and allow access to its internal registers. Getting access to the internal ROM and RAM would also be a concern. Without this support built into the CPU, then there is no way for the debug unit to get the data it needs.

So, yes, there is a debug module that could be adapted. It'll be a bit of work though, more than just creating a new BIU. I'll be glad to answer questions about the Advanced Debug System, either here or by email.
