Hi, i am trying to implement a symmetric cryptographic algoritm via FPGA.i am very very new to FPGA and when i searched the net, i saw that there 2 company Xilink and Spartan, and a lot of models of FPGA kit.For a symmetric cryptographic algorith implementation which model of FPGA kit is suitable?
Regards. |

Hello,
Spartan is a product of Xilinx company. The two main company are Xilinx and Altera for «big» FPGA. If you want a kit with a spartan coupled with a processor look at ARMadeus board can be good solution : http://www.armadeus.com/english/products-processor_boards-apf51.html |

No.
There are a few FPGA Companies: Xilinx, Altera, Actel Beside others. Spartan is series of FPGAs from Xilinx. I think this kit is cheap and at same time good for beginners and probably is suitable for embedding most of the symmetric cryptographic algorithm : http://www.digilentinc.com/Products/Detail.cfm?NavPath=2,400,790&Prod=BASYS2 (choose the bigger fpga). |

You can buy a Spartan 6 from "Digilent" at $119 , the same thing will cost you double from Xilinx , However the choice of your chip will depend on what kind of I/O's are required and if you will need a soft processor to implement your project .

thank you for your replies.i have 2 more questions first is:will 1 board be enough to implement 2 symmetric encryption algorithms?one of 2 algorithms will be AES.my second question is: is there any need some additional components like a memory, or else is a board enough to implement an encryption algorithm?

If you are unsure how big FPGA you need, then you can implement the design, simulate it try to build it for different FPGAs. That way you will get an estimate on how much resources you really need.

yes , you can do it in Xilinx ise , it will give you the no. of slices required too ! , but i guess AES can be implemented on Spartan 3e also ! , don't know about spartan 6 .
