I want to design an Intel 8088 Micro on Spartan 3E
Does anyone have any ideas on how I should start?

So far i have managed to get a hold of literature
on the micro and gained an understanding of both
the hardware and software views of the micro.

This link possibly provide a complete implementation:

http://www.ht-lab.com/freecores/cpu8086/cpu86.html

But the following has a few verilog files at the bottom (half-completed):

hey,
I'm assuming you're not sure where to start the vhdl description.

At the moment im designing a z80 based microcontroller for spartan3E.

I started by looking at processor descriptions in vhdl so i could get an idea of how to actually go about it. A lot of books have a chapter on this, some good ones include

VHDL by design by Perry, simple processor with descriptions.
Charles Roth: 1st edition is Motoralla processor, 2nd edition is MIPS processor.
Another book which described a simple processor called the GUMNUT processor (easy google to find).

The first thing i did was design a simple ALU with one input that could inc, dec.
Created an Register File.
And then designed a simple controller that was merely an FSM.
Then simulated.

Then i just added one thing at a time to the datapath.
But i'm aiming for a decent datapath that can implement the majority of instructions.
The i'm going to look at interrupts and a stack.

Synthesis.

I've been told for the spartan3E probs for other FPGAs im not sure. that it doesn't like tri state buses.
So in my case im using a data in, data out bus and multiplexes to implement the same effect.
There are probably other things as well and if you know them let me know cause im almost about to start synthesis.
