I am doing a project where in I am transferring data from I2C EERPOM to SRAM. I am totally new to FPGA implementation and it will be of great help if you can let me know where I can start. I am familiar with verilog coding and need some guidance on how to create an interface. As a first step, I will need to simulate the results so that I can make sure that the interface is working. Please advice.

You can find i2c core in the projects part in Opencores and in verilog.
Of course it's the begining of a long process because you have to write a sequencer as FSM or as processor. If you have no skill on processor in FPGA, write a FSM it's probably easier.
