Hi, everyone,

I'm looking for a free DSP core recently. Does anyone can help me with this?

Thanks a lot!

Well... It's likely that no one is going to know what you mean when you say "DSP core"... Are you looking for a core to perform a specific operation, or are you looking for a general purpose DSP core? Have you taken 10 minutes to look at the list of cores offered, right here, on OpenCores?

Ummmmmmmmm... No... It doesn't...

The original poster was looking for a "free" core... The OP also didn't mention that he was using a Xilinx part...

Yes, a general purpose DSP core with C compiler.
Maybe it's mission impossible. I've to make one on myself.

In my original response to you I mentioned looking at the list of "Projects"... Have you done that? :-) Look under the processors tab... OpenCores54x DSP... Clean room implementation of a C54x... I have no knowledge of the state of this core, but that might be a useful place for you to start... Might be easier for you to start there than to try tackling the entire design yourself...

I've gone through the list of processor cores, and found nothing workable. C54x core maybe compatible with TI instruction set, but we can't go to mass production with it anyway.

Maybe I should licence an ASIP tool (like PD or Target) to customize one. Or start to design one from ISA definition.

Ahhhh... So this is for an actual product vice an academic endeavor... Yep... Sounds like commercial IP is the way to go then...

Thanks, maybe I should talk with CEVA or Tensilica later.

BTW, another question:

Is OpenMSP430 on opencore.org free to use? No legal problems with TI?

Hi Chris,

YES, the openMSP430 is free of use.
The core is under the modified BSD license, which means that you don't really have any obligation beside keeping the header files intact.
It is then 100% up to you to either keep the core as it is, or make a 1TFLOPs DSP monster out of it. BTW, if you manage to do the later, I would be more than curious to see it... but you won't have to show me if you don't want to.

For the legal issues, the short answer is NO. For more details, I will redirect you to the following thread from the openMSP430 discussion group:
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/discuss_openmsp430/756gvCIWKPc

Hopefully this will clarify your concerns. If not, don't hesitate to re-contact me.

Cheers,
Olivier

I'm on board with wanting to see the 1 TFLOPS result as well... :-)

A friend showed me this one http://code.google.com/p/ajardsp/ and it looks quite complete, but I haven't tried it myself. It uses a wishbone interface, so it should be quite easy to hook up to many of the other cores available on opencores
