Hi all!

I am currently taking an ASIC design course and working on a project with three other teammates.

We need to use a datapath in our design which performs storage and manipulation of data through ALU.

But we can't seem to figure out how to get started with the finite state machine for our datapath controller because we haven't done a similar design in our previous labs. After some researching online, we found some resources but they are all aimed at CPU datapaths which are very confusing.

Attached is the datapath portion of our design. Any clues or pointers on figuring out the FSM for the datapath controller?

Thanks in advance!

You should take a look at using a microprogrammed controller. You can find an example of such an FSM, and support tools for it, in the opencores project M65C02 (processors).
