Hi,
In case anyone else had problems installing Xilinx ISE 7.1 on Linux like I did, here are some solutions.. I installed this on Slackware-current, but it might apply for your case.. 1) Problem: missing libXm.so.3 Solution: Install Openmotif.. 2) Problem: something about an RPC error.. message pops up after several minutes of inactivity.. Solution: Enable RPC 3) Problem: something about a tcp connection error: Solution: Ensure that your hostname is defined correctly in /etc/hosts (mine wasn't) Hope this can help someone else try it out on other distros.. cheers.. -- with metta, Shawn Tan |

Hi Shawn!
In case anyone else had problems installing Xilinx ISE 7.1 on Linux like I
did, here are some solutions.. I installed this on Slackware-current, but it might apply for your case.. 3) Problem: something about a tcp connection error: Solution: Ensure that your hostname is defined correctly in /etc/hosts (mine wasn't) Thanks for the hint with hostname. I had persistent problems installing ISE 7.1 on SuSE 9.2. The installer was not able to find any host to connect to because of this reason. One problem remained as the X server did not accept remote connections on my installation. I had to set DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER_TCP_PORT_6000 to 'yes' in Yast's "Editor for /etc/sysconfig Files" (Desktop->Display manager) and restart the system. xdm/kdm started the X server with '-nolisten tcp' when the default setting 'no' for this variable was active. Hi!
Thanks for the hints!
In case anyone else had problems installing Xilinx ISE 7.1 on Linux like I
did, here are some solutions.. I installed this on Slackware-current, but it might apply for your case.. 1) Problem: missing libXm.so.3 Solution: Install Openmotif.. This is pachage "libmotif3" in Debian. Additionally, you need your X11 client listen on TCP, so don't use "-nolisten tcp" in your X command line. If you happen to use GDM in a Debian installation as login manager, just change the line DisallowTCP=true to DisallowTCP=false in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf and logout from X and login again.
2) Problem: something about an RPC error.. message pops up after several
Additionally I found a problem with the kernel modules, which are
compiled for 2.4.20-18.8smp, so with 2.6 kernels you can't use some
functionality. I guess this is the serial and USB cable.
During installation it also complains about problems
reading/creating/modifying the files
/etc/rc.local
/lib/modules/misc/windrvr6.o
/lib/modules/misc/install_windrvr6
/lib/modules/misc/install_xpc4drvr
The latter 3 belong to the kernel module thingy which I explained above.
Unfortunately Xilinx wants its modules in /lib/modules/misc/ instead
of /lib/modules/[version]/misc. :-(
Since I don't have the common system config file /etc/rc.local the
installer couldn't add an entry to load the two modules.
Fortunately, the installer just complains, but finishes gracefully.
I tried the ISE. It is implemented using WINE :-(. Why? Silly guys!
Besides that, it works properly. Just tried a little project, some
synthesis and looked at the RTL schematic. Pretty.
If your fonts don't display well, just change them in the Edit ->
Preferences... dialog (Console Properties, ISE Text Editor) to e.g.
"fixed" with 10px height. This seems not to be possible for the RTL
Schematic viewer. :-(
Unfortunately my mouse wheel doesn't work in any window of ISE. :-(
I hope the additional info is helpful for somebody.
Bye
Hansi

You also have to edit the Xserver file.
#:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br vt7
