Would it be possible to create a solid state drive using the PCI core, memory core and off the shelf DIMM modules?

Sure, that should work.
But why not use the ATA Core + Memory Controller + DIMMs ?

I suppose that would work. Better actually. Is the ATA core simpiler/smaller then the PCI core? How much memrory could be supported with the current memory controller?
