Someone can recommend if it is wiser to go with cardbus or pcmcia
for WLAN cards for embedded systems?

PCMCIA is rather simple to implement but it seems that most WLAN
cards are nowadays 32-bit cardbus type and this would mean
a rather complex PCI like design for a small embedded system...

Someone successfully build/modified PCI core for cardbus?
