i compiled the source code of GCC 4.5.1 from svn/tag directory,
and there comes an error like this:

gcc/doc/cpp.texi:48 Unknown index 'vr' and /or `op
predefined Macros'(perhaps incorrect sectioning ?).xi: 3454
corss reference to nonexistent node'Standard Prescan ' (perhaps incorrect sectioning ?).

there are also some more "corss reference to nonexistent node" and "perhaps incorrect sectioning " indication.

anyone has met the same problem before?
please help.

i am really courious that, why in the compiling process, files in the doc directory are used. and when the files have something wrong, the compiling process are stopped. should they be indepedent of each other?

any comment will be apprecaited! thanks !

Hi czzheng,

Two possibilities are that you don't have the texinfo tools on your machine, or (more likely I think) that you have some parts of the documentation missing. Could you try "svn update" in the doc directory to see if anything else is downloaded - SVN sometimes seems to "forget" to download file.

It's not unreasonable that when you build a tool, its documentation is also built. GNU tool documentation is written in texinfo, from which PDF, PostScript, HTML and info files can be built. The default builds just the info files, so if you set up your INFOPATH correctly "info gcc" will pick up the documentation for GCC for the OpenRISC version of the compiler. There isn't much in the GCC documentation yet, but there is in GDB (look at the section on configuration specific options for embedded processors).

HTH

hi,Jeremy
thank you very much for your help.
yes, i donnot have texinfo tools installed on my machine. i installed it and the errors related to the texinfo are gone.

and i also find another problem.
i find most of the files i use are in DOS format.
i download openrisc svn on a windows machine, then copy to linux machine, but i don't know they are in DOS format because of this reason or they are originally in DOS format on the server.
i changed all files to UNIX format, then i do all the compiling process again, most of the weird error are gone, and now, i have compiled successfully binutils,gcc,gdb,or1ksim and newlib whose source files are from tags directoy.

i think the problem of DOS format may give other friends some reference.

thank again for you and this great community!

Hi czzheng

I believe SVN understands about the difference between Windows and DOS formats (i.e. the line endings). If you did your download on the Linux machine, you would have got files with Linux endings.

In yours case, the linux utility "dos2unix" makes the conversion easy. I expect there is a simple way of copying from Windows to Linux systems making the transformation on the go. Perhaps someone with more systems experience could contribute here?

Best wishes,

Jeremy
