or1ksim make check error

Hello Everyone,

I'm planning to work with the openrisc simulator for a TLM wrapper project.

I followed the install instructions for or1ksim described in:
http://opencores.org/or1k/Or1ksim

Then I installed the GNU toolchain following the "build from source" instructions in:
http://opencores.org/or1k/OpenRISC_GNU_tool_chain

Regarding the version numbers, I used the latest or1ksim (0.5.rc2 aquired from SVN checkout) and "linux 2.6.39" and "uclibc 2.6.37 compatibele" for the toolchain install. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32-bit) distribution and made sure to install all the prerequisites before the whole installation process. Components' versions: GCC - 4.6.3, GDB - 7.4, binutils - 2.22.
Both installations succeeded without errors. But when I perform the make check command for the simulator I get the following error:

make[4]: Entering directory `/home/gabor/or1ksim-0.5.2/builddir_or1ksim/testsuite/test-code-or1k/support'

make[1]: *** [check-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/gabor/or1ksim-0.5.2/builddir_or1ksim/testsuite'
make: *** [check-recursive] Error 1

Can you tell me what is causing this and how to resolve it?

(Please note, that I'm fairly new to linux programming, so excuse me if I may ask very basic questions.)

Thanks in advance!
Gabriel

Hi Gabriel

The tests are not picking up the new compiler tool chain you have just built. I think you may need to do one or both of the following:

  1. Make sure you have added the location of the new tools to your search path. For example, if you installed in /opt/or32-new then use one of the following:

      PATH=/opt/or32-new/bin:$PATH
      setenv PATH /opt/or32-new/bin:$PATH

Use the first if your shell is sh or bash, use the second if your shell is csh or tcsh. If you have a mainstream Linux, then by default you will probably be using bash.

  2. If this alone doesn't work, you may also need to rerun the Or1ksim configuration script. I can't remember whether it needs to search to find the target compiler to use.

HTH

Jeremy

Thank You for your answer, re-running the or1ksim configuration script resolved this problem!

However, the test resulted in 1 error, namely during the mmu.exp test. It gives timeout error:

I also tried out a helloworld test program with the GDB tool using the simulator, and it works fine. (http://opencores.org/or1k/OpenRISC_GNU_tool_chain#Using_GDB_with_Or1ksim)
So, does this test failure means critical problem?

Hi Gabriel,

I'm not sure what that MMU error is. You should find an error log in bd/testsuite/or1ksim.log. Could you post it for me to examine.

You might like to try the very latest Or1ksim in SVN. I tried that yesterday and all tests passed for me. However all the tests should also pass for the version you are using!

Best wishes,

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

Meanwhile I managed to resolve this issue. The problem was, that the mmu test always got interrupted after 30 seconds. It can be clearly seen in the attached log file (search for the word 'timeout').

After a quick search I found out, that in the ../testsuite/or1ksim.tests/mmu.exp file there's a parameter which defines this timeout interval, which was indeed 30 seconds.
I guess my linux (running on VM virtual box) is simply too slow to process it in this much time...
After changing this parameter to 100 seconds all tests passed, including the mmu, which took 76 seconds for me.

Thank You for Your help! Looking forward to working with the simulator!

Best wishes,
Gabriel
