Introduction to PCI?

Can anyone recommend some reading material for a person trying to learn a bit about PCI? I am trying to understand how operating systems interface with PCI devices. I have learned a bit from the book Linux Device Drivers but I would like to learn more. I don't really feel like spending $100 on the spec from the PCI-SIG as I doubt that it would really help that much. Thanks.

The PCI System Architecture book by Tom Shanley and Don Anderson (published by MindShare) is the best PCI reference I have come across and is as readable as one could expect something like this to be.
