USB 2.0 speed
by Unknown on Feb 20, 2005
Not available!
Hello,

I am very new to the world of FPGA devices and hardware design in general.

In fact, I do not yet even own an FPGA development board... (Any
suggestions for a student on a small budget?)

Anyway, I am contemplating a "home brew" webcam project, and I was
wondering what kind of speed I can realistically expect to push over
USB 2.0 link.

The USB 2.0 spec claims 480 Mb/S, but most USB devices I have seen
don't run at anywhere near that speed, so I am a little suspicious.

Thanks,
David

Hi David, For a cheap FPGA development board, you may have a look at: https://www.digilentinc.com/Sales/Product.cfm?Prod=S3BOARD They also have the 400kgate and 1000kgate versions, for an extra 20 to 60 bucks. I would say that for a beginner, this board has enough fire power from a features/price ratio point of view ... :) Take care, Ovidiu ----- Original Message ----- From: bsd@bsdlazarus.com> To: usb@opencores.org> Sent: Sunday, February 20, 2005 2:43 PM Subject: [usb] USB 2.0 speed

The usb spec lists the achievable bandwiths for many scenarios. These are realistic as far as the usb bus is concerned. In practice the combination of the usb controllers on the host and the host operating system often limits the bandwith. This seems to be getting better so you should use a recent mainboard. Maybe you can even find chipset tests that can give you information which chipset achieves the highest throughput with the least cpu load. . A development board with a usb 2.0 phy starting at 92€ is http://www.trenz-electronic.de/prod/proden18.htm Kolja Sulimma bsd@bsdlazarus.com wrote:
