The Controller has to write and read to a SATA2 hard disk drive (HDD)/ solid state drive (SSD) from a logic module inside an FPGA without a micro controller and driver software. Which supports SATA1(1.5 Gbps)/SATA2 (3 Gbps) data transfer rates.
High speed data transfer from an FPGA to a non-volatile mass storage device like HDD/SSD became a reality by this project.
A re-usable test environment based on microblaze processor for real time hardware testing of FPGA modules (written in VHDL/Verilog) also developed as part of the project validation.
Xilinx Virtex-5 ML506 development board was used for the development.
